dscf3467_0 dscf3461_0dscf3456_0dscf3448_0dscf3469_0This weekend, we held our annual New Boy campout for the newest members of Troop 386 – Kellen, Matthew, and Jesse.  Troop Guides Alex and Freddie were in charge and did a great job of keeping all of that young energy focused.  The boys were able to accomplish quite a bit and had fun doing it.  They earned their Totem Chip and Fireman’s chit for starters.  After a day filled with accomplishment, we searched for a geocache in the park and practiced using our compasses in the process.  Kellen (eagle eyes) was the one who found the cache hidden in the stump.

The new scout dads got to see how things work in Boy Scouts.  They also learned that camping does not mean “roughing it” at least as far as meals are concerned.  The boys finished off the weekend with a breakfast of that perennial favorite, Monkey Bread.  I expect great things from these guys over the next year!

We will be heading back to Trapper’s Rendezvous for our January campout in 2012.  This is a huge event – over 4000 people attend each year from all accross the central United States.  It is truly a unique and fun event.  We need to sign up and pay by Dec 31st so Monday’s meeting will be the only opportunity to sign up before this deadline.  After this, the cost goes up.

Boys that have been to this in the past always want to go back again.  Don’t miss out on the fun!

November Robber’s Cave Backpacking Adventure

Troop 386 ventured to Robber’s Cave State Park for our November campout. After spending the morning exploring caves, and climbing rocks, the scouts hit the trail for an overnight backpacking adventure.

Darren, Stephen, Lior, our adults, and I just arrived back from our fall-break backpacking trip along the Buffalo River in Arkansas. Everyone had a fun time as we were on the trail for three days, hiking over 20 miles. On this trip, we were able to explore a 440-foot tall bluff and a 290-foot tall waterfall. On our trip, we also spotted several elk, deer, snakes, and a bald eagle. Check out all of our pictures on our photo page. Don’t miss next year’s trip!

Last weekend was Webelos Woods at Camp John Nichols. The Webelos had a bunch of fun on our monkey bridge, and building structures with Tinker Toys. We had a different cooking experience of cooking on a gravel road. We couldn’t cook less than five feet away from any vegetation. We also were entertained by the singing  and ukulele and guitar playing by the Raines family. Thanks Webelos for a great weekend!!!

On this last camp-out we were as high birds in the flying squirrel part of the campout!!!!!

We also did many other COPEs things like the trust fall and Chocolate River. At the end of the
Flying Squirrel

day we had a cooking competition that was won by the Flaming Bunnies and their famous pot- stickers and not so famous Tapioca  Bubble Tea.

The boys learned many important scout skills such as raising and lowering the American flag. Zion, Henry, Marcus, Tyler, Sabastian, Stephen, Jarrett, Brenner, Collins, Zach, and Matt all earned their Scout badges, Fireman Chit, and Totin Chip; they also made a large dent on their Tendefoot and Second class badges.  Everyone had a great time at the huge game of capture the flag on Jamboree Hill.

A great time was had by all at the January Trapper’s Rendezvous campout near Newton, Kansas. Approximately 4,500 Boy Scouts attended.

This was one of the more humorous videos I took during the weekend. This scout (not from our troop) had traded up from a crocodile tooth and a pocket knife to a laptop, and was hoping to eventually trade for a Nintendo DS.

Lots more photos and videos of the weekend are available on Flickr!
