Congratulations to Darren who was elected to be the SPL for the next six months.  It  was so close tonight that we had to hold a run off election. In addition, the following boys were selected as Patrol Leaders:

Darren selected the following boys

About 25 boys from the troop and a few visitors made it out for our annual Electronics Lock-In.  This is the one time a year that we forget about the great outdoors and veg out in front of the video games all night.  Before we started up the electronics, we spent a couple of hours in the Athletic Center swimming and playing basketball.

The pizza run at around midnight and fresh hot Krispy Kreme doughnuts at 6 am finished the night off perfectly.  Sorry parents for your grumpy boys.

We will be heading back to Trapper’s Rendezvous for our January campout in 2012.  This is a huge event – over 4000 people attend each year from all accross the central United States.  It is truly a unique and fun event.  We need to sign up and pay by Dec 31st so Monday’s meeting will be the only opportunity to sign up before this deadline.  After this, the cost goes up.

Boys that have been to this in the past always want to go back again.  Don’t miss out on the fun!

Freedom is never free. Thank a veteran today for risking all for us.

Last night, Darren, Daniel, Aaron and Brenner opened up the Veteran’s Day Event with a sharp flag ceremony. About a hundred spectators were present for this patriotic ceremony. Our troop was well represented with about fwenty present.

The most touching part of the ceremony was the reading of the names of 102 heroes from Oklahoma. I couldn’t keep from thinking about the life events they’ll never have – birthdays, marriage, birth of children and a million other little events. They have indeed sacrificed all for us.

Thank a veteran today!

We had a very successful 6-month Planning Meeting recently with about twenty boys in attendance.  There are lots of great campouts planned in the coming months.  Check out the calendar for details.

One of the tasks we accomplished at the meeting was to select a summer camp for 2012.  Chris F presented to the group his research of possible camps.  After  much discussion, the group elected to go to Camp Cedars.  The camp is located in the hilly woodlands along the South Platte River near Cedar Bluffs, Nebraska.  We went there five years ago and it was a great camp.  They have the best trained staff of any camp I have seen.  The first year scout program, called Kit Fox is outstanding.  They have a great climbing and COPE program and lots of merit badges.  The list of great features goes on.

Check out the Camp Cedars Guide (2011 edition) for more details.

Welcome to the Scoutmaster’s Corner.  It is my pleasure to share some of my insight about Boy Scouts and about life issues in general with you. As scouts, we believe in some things that aren’t so popular these days.  Where others might “look out for number one,” a scout is looking for chances to help others.  A scout takes seriously his duty to God and country, to others, and finally to self. The twelve points of the scout law should make the cornerstone for how we live our lives.  Trustworthy, loyal, helpful, .  .  . and reverent. These we live by 24/7.

Great news!  We hit it big in the lottery for 2011 Sea Base expeditions.  Our group decided it had two different activities to try for – Live Aboard SCUBA and Coral Reef Sailing.  Any scout who is 14 years old by September 1, 2011 is eligible.  You have to be certified to do the scuba.

Scuba is cool!

The scuba activity involves sailing around the Florida Keys for eight days and scuba diving at will.  Most crews are able to do 15 dives including two or three night dives.  While under way, we get to learn to sail a big sailing ship and fish.  We chose our week based in part on a special lobster season so hopefully we’ll be eating like kings! We depart July 23rd and return July 30th of 2011.

Coral Reef Sailing

At the time the divers are doing their thing, a second group will be sailing the keys on a 45 foot sailboat.  There will be ample oportunity to snorkel all the best reefs and to fish while under way.  Everyone should return as an expert sailor.  This trip is from July 22nd to July 28th.

Sign ups for both these trips will get serious at the end of the summer.  I can’t wait!
